Thermo-mechanical and Air Patenting in Modern Rolling: Characteristics and Advantages, Gianbruno Luvarà , Pittini Group

In modern rolling process, thermal treatment during the whole implementation, along with the air patenting at the final stage, plays a key role in order to achieve high-quality rolled products. During the whole rolling phase, temperature is kept under control by five cooling units before gauging and final air patenting, which allows to: define the austenite grain size with greater precision; and achieve better elongation properties and better necking.

In this talk, we will present a feasibility study for a hydrometallurgical process, based on the employment of Cathodic Plasma Electrolysis (CPE), aimed at galvanizing steel using directly Zn-containing solutions obtained by leaching of EAF dusts, thus avoiding any intermediate step of zinc metal recovery (e.g., through classical electrowinning).

A new boron-free carrier coating for wire-rod preparation has excellent wire adhesion, improved lubricating capacity and high resistance to oxidation. Less of it is needed than borax, and the new carrier coatings allow more cost-effective and easier  process management. Research was done with new tungsten carbide dies, working with grain sizes and additives allowing a much higher wear resistance while maintaining quality. An experimental machine was used in trials done with the University of Milan (chemical part) and the University of Trento (metallurgical part), working with the Tkt Group technical department.

Many global industry trends in the wire industry relate to innovation, speed, cost reduction, digitalization, automation, reduced energy consumption and environmental protection, and often they have a role in Bekaert's technology projects. This paper highlights some developments and challenges in wire deformation and coatings, such as higher strength and sound ductility of high-carbon wires, improved corrosion resistance, and endurance. It also discusses more novel approaches like smart machinery for more robust processing, newly developed test techniques, and challenges to comply with fast-changing regulations.

Mario Frigerio has developed rod preparation lines for all kind of steel wires (low-carbon, high-carbon, stainless steel), which can be completed by an electrolytic phosphating process, adjustable to various applications. E4: Ecological, Ergonomic, Efficient those are the main features of the lines which are driving the wire rod preparation world into a new era.

Role of High-Carbon Cold Drawn Unalloyed Steel Wire Properties on Variations in Dimensions of Helical Compression Springs During Coiling Operation, Amit Agarwal and Satish Kadu, Tata Steel Ltd.

Large Spring-to-Spring dimension variations is one of the key factor governing the productivity of spring manufacturers. Apart from spring coiling parameters, a significant contribution is made by the input wire, used for making springs, in terms of physical properties and wire drawing process conditions. This paper presents detailed studies w.r.t. input wire properties and corresponding performance of coiling of helical compression springs used for 2-wheeler suspensions, which forms the basis for optimization of wire properties and bring down the variations.

This presentation presents new equipment with advanced straightness measuring, surface quality and straightening control that create new quality standards in producing drawn, extruded and peeled bars (with any profiles). The use of artificial intelligence has made this possible by advances in machine design,  engineering optimization and line operation that result in higher-quality products. Quality control has become an active part of the control of the machines themselves as new paradigms of greater integration exist between the know-how of the manufacturer and the end user.

This paper presents an original method for assessing low-cycle endurance and resistance to fretting corrosion. Under bending, the convex outer surface of the wire is subjected to tensile stresses. The tensile stresses act along the wire axis due to bending and have maximum values in the surface layer. Compressive stresses from bending on the outside of the wire act in the transverse direction.

Industry 4.0 includes some tools that could be very productive for the nail industry: sensors; intelligent machines; automatic adjustment; augmented reality; data collection; the cloud; big data; and analytical tools. We use Industry 4.0 in different ways in our field. Deploying relevant sensors can make the machines more intelligent, enabling automatic adjustments, communication with digital manuals to help operators, provide data for control of critical machine parts, creation of big data and algorithms for long-term better performance; and establishing a MES platform as standalone tool or to link up with ERP system.

Today many manufacturing plants are getting increasingly digitized to stay competitive. Data from the production machines can be transferred to a central storage/cloud for process/factory surveillance and for optimizing the processes. However, first data must be acquired. Wire drawing machines are seldom equipped with sensors that measure product quality, tool wear or the condition of the lubrication. This work presents concepts, and applications, of such sensors for wire drawing machines.
